However route from Nepal is a standard one. Mount Everest Located in Nepal was first conquered by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa in 1953 and since then many people have climbed it. Two men from Nepal have climbed it a record 21 times and the number of ascents to the top has reached above 5000. Messner and Habeler were the first climbers to reach the top without oxygen supplement. There are many base camps. The main base camp is situated 5335m and the upper high camps at 6100m, 6500m, 7400m and 8000m and at 8848m. Kanchenjunga was considered to be the highest peak in the world prior the discovery of the Everest. The Survey in 1802 by British India was the first step in the discovery of the Everest. The current elevation was determined by Indian Survey in 1955, backed up by China in 1975.
