INSURANCE AND EVACUATION
Travel insurance is a very important thing you have and it is a requirement if you want to book with us. We consider travel insurance to be of utmost importance for your own safety and security. We strongly recommend that your insurance covers rescue services, injuries and sickness.

Although accidents and emergencies do not happen often, we have a complete rescue and an evacuation plan. In case of a serious sickness or causality, we will make sure you are rescued by a helicopter. That is why, please make sure that this is covered by your health insurance or be prepared to be able to pay it on your own.

 

BEST TIME TO TREK
The best season to trek in the Himalaya region is autumn (from mid-September till November’s end), and spring (from the beginning of March until mid-May). Temperatures will drop considerably as you trek higher every day. The nights are cold (between -10 *C to 5*C but the days are sunny and hot (between 10*C to 20*C). The mornings are usually clear, with clouds building up during the afternoon, disappearing at night. Trekking during the monsoon and winter is not recommended, as the visibility during monsoon is limited, upper parts and high passes could be covered with snow during winter. March, April, October and November are the most favored months.

However, some places like Upper Dolpo, Upper Mustang and Humla are outside of the monsoon shade and can be visited all year round.

 

ACCOMMODATION DURING THE TREK
On your trekking route, trekkers are accommodated in tea houses and mountain lodges. Most of them are simple and basic, but very clean and comfortable. Please note that during the high season, it is very likely that you will have to share the room as all of the accommodation possibilities reach their maximum capacity. Asian Journey will always make sure to look for a single room for you, whenever possible (Single rooms are a subject to an extra charge).

 

TREK GRADES
In order for you to be able to easily select the most suitable trek for you, we have ranked our trekking tours according to the physical fitness they require, as well as the geographical and weather conditions that define them. Please make sure that you go through this list before deciding to book for a particular trek with us.

Easy: These treks are meant for everybody with at least a little bit of an active life. The trekking time per day does not exceed 6 hours (although this also depends on your walking speed) and an altitude of 3500m. The trails are not steep and there is virtually no danger of altitude sickness. These treks are short (not longer than 10 days).

Moderate: Treks graded as moderate are generally a bit longer, lasting for up to 15 days. The trekking time per day can be between 5-8 hours and the altitude goes as high as 5000 meters. However, trekkers do not linger on those altitudes for a long time. The routes can have significant uphill and downhill parts and trekkers should expect small snow patches on the higher altitudes.

Strenuous: These trekking routes take a longer period of time to trek through, between 2 and 3 weeks with an altitude that can reach 5500 meters. Trekkers should note that these trekking routes are far away from the village settlements and are much more rarely visited than the other easier treks. Having these things in mind, physical fitness and good health conditions, as well as a true adventure spirit, are a must!

Challenging: These treks should be reserved only for the trekkers who are very physically prepared as well as experienced and ready to spend more than 2 weeks on an altitude between 5000 and 6000 meters. Those routes go through remote and snow covered areas and additional equipment such as crampons and ropes might be necessary. Nevertheless, these treks are considered by experts to be the most exciting ones!

 

FLIGHTS DELAY & CANCELLATION
It is very important to note that most of the domestic flights within Nepal depend highly on the weather conditions. Thus, delays happen often. If you are delayed longer than your trip program then we can help reschedule your international flights however there is likely to be a fee charged by the airline for this. You will have to bear all of the additional costs incurred in Kathmandu such as accommodation and meals as well.

 

HOT SHOWERS
As far as showers are concerned, most of the lodges and tea houses have hot showers (provided by a solar panel) and the presence of hot water depends largely on the weather. Some of the lodges ask for an extra charge for a hot shower.

INTERNET & COMMUNICATION
On almost all the trekking routes there are telephone facilities in the village shops. Moreover, most of the cell phones work and if you ever need to contact somebody, we will be more than happy to provide you with a mobile phone throughout the trek. Some of the guesthouses have a very modest internet access as well.

 

MEAL & DRINKING WATER
On all treks we provide standard breakfast, lunch and three course dinner, tea or coffee will also be included with each meal. Your guide will help with menu selection and ensure that you get the best value meals possible. Although the food is usually plentiful and delicious, you should be aware that the menu is not normally extensive. Most teahouses offer a variety of rice and noodle dishes, as well as soup and seasonal vegetables. A variety of cereals, bread and egg dishes are generally available for breakfast. There will also be plenty of snacks available such as biscuits, chocolate and soft drinks and in some areas you will find fresh fruit in season. You can buy bottled mineral water from local lodges and shops en route or you can also ask your guide to fill your water bottle with boiled water and treat with water purification pills.

 

MEDICAL ADVICE
If you have ever had a more serious medical condition, we highly recommend you consult your doctor about your ability for trekking in the Himalaya before booking. We suggest that you take some pain-killing pills with you as well as some light medicine for diarrhea and fever. Age is no barrier for trekking given the fact that you are fit and healthy to take up the challenge. If you have no experience on a high altitude before, there is a possibility that your body will react negatively and you will get altitude sickness. There are pills that help with that condition and we advise you to consult your doctor before embarking on the trip. In some cases, the altitude sickness can get serious even with the medicine and we will have to stop the trip and get on a lower altitude. People usually recover in a day or two and you will be able to continue with the trip.

 

PERSONAL EXPENSES
All food and accommodation is included in the trekking rate, except for drinks, snacks and extra expenses such as charging points, hot showers etc. A tip for our guides and porters would be much appreciated, although not necessary. We recommend a 10-15% from the total price of the trek as a tip.

 

ELECTRICITY & HEATING
Electricity is available for charging, although extra charging batteries are always recommended! Some of the guest houses require an extra fee for charging your gadgets.

Each travel lodge has a spacious dining room (lounge) and this is the only space which is heated during the winters. However, blankets are available in each room and you can always ask for an extra one if you are feeling cold!
